Old KYIV
« on: 06:26 10-Mar-2015 »
I have traveled to Kiev a number of times buy am still getting to know this ancient and beautiful city.  I am reading Bulgakov's WHITE GUARD and need help identifying landmarks Bulgakov refers to in the book.  Are there any architectural history buffs out there?  Thank you in advance.

I went to Bulgakov's house, walked Andriyivsky Uzviz and stayed in Podil.  Podil is my favorite place in Kiev.  I wonder if the funeral service of the Turbin matriarch took place at St Andrews or somewhere else.  Where was the Embankment?  Or the chapel of good hope?  What did Kreschatik looks like?  I have been to the Arsenal Metro.  What about the cemetery where they buried the Turbine parents? Or the military academy Nikolai went to?

As you know the Soviets, changed the names of many of the streets in Old Kiev.

At the time of Bulgakov's story in the book, there were 4 military academies.  The Konstantine Military Academy is where I believe Colonel Nai-Tours was killed.  But historians down play the December 14th battle as nothing but skirmishes

Both opening and final posts modified to show KYIV rather than Kiev, thank you.

Oh when will they ever learn... When will they ever learn!
In Russia we only had two TV channels. Channel One was propaganda. Channel Two consisted of a KGB officer telling you: Turn back at once to Channel One. Yakov Smirnoff
